116 days to go to Insect Week
The Yorkshire Air Museum near York is situated within rural North Yorkshire. Its Nature of Flight Project utilises a 7-acre ancient woodland site as an environmental education area for visitors based upon its links with early aviation. The site includes lakes and walkways and was originally surveyed for lepidoptra in 1853. Today Butterfly Conservation UK undertakes regular moth trapping and the project is supported by the Environment Agency, DEFRA, Carstairs Countryside Trust and Natural England.
Mayfly and stonefly larvae are used to indicate freshwater quality as they are sensitive to environmental conditions.
